# Operation events

Events provide a timeline of operations such as application changes, releases, group updates, and server changes. They help answer what happened before a failure.

## Inspect an incident

1. Select a time range around the incident.
2. Locate events for the affected application or resource.
3. Compare the event time and details with logs and metrics.
4. Check the resulting resource state.
5. Verify the business endpoint or data after recovery.

## History and diagnostics

Retained historical events depend on Insight storage and retention. Runtime diagnostic messages can be held in memory and may not survive a restart.

An empty list can mean no matching events, an incorrect time range, missing collection, or expired history. A query failure is a separate condition and must be diagnosed as such.

## Practical use

For a failed release, correlate configuration changes, candidate validation, task exits, and rollback activity. For a missing server, correlate removal or label changes with scheduling problems.

Record timestamps and resource identities when reporting an issue. Avoid copying credentials from related logs. See [application logs](/docs/guides/observability/logs/application/), [server metrics](/docs/guides/observability/metrics/server/), and [retention settings](/docs/guides/observability/settings/).
