# Volume management

A volume belongs to one server. Identically named volumes on different machines are different data. Application deletion retains volumes; volume deletion removes their data.

## Enable and create

1. As an Admin, enable volume management, provided by the separate cdelivery-agent image.
2. Open the target server's volumes.
3. Create a volume with a valid platform name and an optional description of up to 256 characters.
4. Select that same server when creating a [stateful application](/docs/guides/apps/persistence/stateful/).
5. Mount the volume at the image's data directory and verify data survives replacement.

## Inspect capacity

Size queries traverse data and can take longer for large volumes. A missing size is not proof that a volume is empty. Server total and available space describe the host filesystem, not just the selected volume.

Reserved platform volumes are not managed as ordinary application volumes. Use descriptions to record what each volume is for.

## Delete and troubleshoot

> **Caution**
>
> Deleting a volume removes its local data. Application deletion retains the volume.

If saving a volume description fails, refresh the list and edit the description of the created volume.

Verify references and a usable backup before deleting. If a container still uses the volume, wait for its exit or resolve the reference. Disabling the management component does not delete application volumes.

If listing fails, check server connectivity and the component. For a missing volume, verify server ID and name; creating a same-named volume elsewhere is not recovery.

Replication and consistent backups remain the responsibility of the storage solution. See [persistence](/docs/guides/apps/persistence/).
