# Roles and permissions

Roles apply across the platform, not per group. Reader, Operator, and Admin provide progressively broader capabilities.

## Permission matrix

| Capability | Reader | Operator | Admin |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Inspect shared applications, servers, and runtime information | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Manage own profile, password, bindings, and API keys | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Change applications, XHealth, XJob, and Guardian | No | Yes | Yes |
| Manage servers, groups, volumes, and platform settings | No | No | Yes |
| Manage users and issue join credentials | No | No | Yes |
| Perform sensitive model discovery | No | No | Yes |

Shared output redacts explicitly recognized secrets. Arbitrary logs, files, and environment values are not guaranteed to be hidden, so Readers must be trusted with operational information.

## Effective permissions

A browser session uses the account's current role. An API key uses the lower of its role ceiling and the user's current role. Downgrading an account limits existing keys immediately; upgrading does not raise an old key's ceiling.

REST, MCP, console operations, and user-initiated AI tools follow the same rules. Message identities use the bound user's permissions. AI on-call uses its configured role, defaults to Operator, and has no user's personal scope.

## Assign and verify

Use Reader for observation, Operator for routine application work, and Admin for platform administration. Verify access with the intended account before attaching automation.

Admins cannot delete or downgrade themselves. Password changes invalidate browser sessions but not API keys. See [users](/docs/administration/accounts/users/) and [API access](/docs/guides/automation/api-mcp/) for handover and revocation.
